The Kano State Film Censorship Board has banned the screening of 22 movies, which are feature-length films being shown on television and online platforms.

The decision was made by the board’s chairman, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha. He stated that the board took this action to clean up the film industry in the state in response to the widespread release of films without proper regulation. According to the law, every film must be submitted to the board for review before it can be screened.

After a meeting with senior officials of the board, the decision to ban these 22 movies was made due to frequent complaints from the public. This action aims to improve the board’s performance and enhance the Kannywood industry as a whole.

The Public Relations Officer of the board, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, announced in a statement obtained by DCL Hausa that the board is legally authorized to censor films. Any film producer registered with the board must submit their work for screening.

The board has urged sponsors of these films to refrain from broadcasting them on television and the internet until they have been screened. They need to comply with the law and submit their films accordingly.

Films will be accepted for screening from Monday, May 18, 2025, to May 25, 2025. Those who fail to comply with this order will face penalties.

Finally, the board has requested cooperation from television stations and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), stating that such collaboration will help ensure the continued success of Kano and Kannywood.
